“Support becomes meaningful when it aligns with someone’s reality”

1. What inspired you to become a social worker?

Growing up in Nepal, I was exposed to various social issues, including poverty, gender and caste-based discrimination, social taboos, and lack of access to resources. This inspired me to become a social worker and help those who are vulnerable and in need.

2. How did your relocation to Australia shape your understanding and views about social work?

Moving to Australia not only changed my views but also made my interest in social work stronger. I have become more inclined towards health-related social work. Although Australia is considered to be an egalitarian society, there is still a large gap to be filled to achieve equality. Being an underrepresented minority myself, I have experienced how the lack of access to social services and prejudices against certain cultures hinder the provision of social services to those who are underrepresented. This experience has made me realize how important social work is and how it is still required.

3. How has your nursing experience shaped and impacted your understanding and views about social work?

Having a nursing background has given me an insight into how social workers contribute to the health sector. I have realized how important social workers are and how much value they add to the health sector.

4. What key lessons have you learned through your social work studies?

I have learned that social work is not just about helping the individual but also about the systems in which they live and the ways in which we can improve those systems. As a student, it has been a great opportunity for me to look at those systems, think about the processes in place, and think about ways in which we can improve those processes.

5. How have academic learning and classroom experiences shaped your skills?

Academic learning and classroom experiences have had a major influence on my skills in terms of social work. It has helped me understand the various principles of social work, including advocacy, empowerment, and social justice. It has helped me relate those principles to real-life situations. It has helped me think critically about social issues and the challenges faced by different communities.

6. What role do placements play in your development as a social work student?

Placements have played an important role in the development of a social work student. It has helped me apply the theories I have learned in real-life situations. It has helped me develop skills that are essential for me as a social worker. It has helped me bridge the gap between theory and practice.

7. How has the learning environment at IHM impacted your journey?

It has been my privilege to learn from experienced and knowledgeable educators at IHM, and I have found it very valuable. I have been provided with a good foundation by my educators regarding the theoretical and practical aspects of social work. I have also been taught to be empathetic and to understand the importance of professionalism and culture. This has been very useful to me regarding my academic and personal growth.

8. How do you envision your future in social work, and what kind of impact do you hope to make?

My journey as a social work student has been impacted by my experiences and my learning. I have been able to learn and understand by engaging in discussions, analysing my learning, and observing social issues in society. Being a social work student has impacted my life and taught me to be compassionate and responsive to social issues. I have been able to understand the importance and depth of social work and the impact it has on society.

I have become aware of social issues in society and the importance of everyone contributing to the upliftment and assistance of those in society who have no voice. I have been learning and growing, and I have been becoming equipped with knowledge and skills to enable me to make a meaningful contribution to the field of social work. In the near future, I envision myself advancing my career and becoming a social worker to make a significant impact in society.
